Tahitian pearls were initially marketed as "black" but in fact come in a variety of colors ranging from black, green, purple, aubergrine to the most desired peacock green. They are produced in the French Polynesia in the black-lipped oyster, Pinctada margaritifera cumingi. They range in size from 8mm to 14mm, but usually cost less than the pearls from the South Sea.
